Ambleside Online Year Two Recitation Printables (free)

Recitation in a Charlotte Mason Education

All children have it in them to recite; it is an imprisoned gift waiting to be delivered.” - Charlotte M. Mason, Home Education

Charlotte Mason has a relaxed and natural approach to recitation, “the children’s art” of reciting beautifully a poem or passage from memory. In Home Education, she tells of a mother who read a poem aloud every day at random while her child was playing or doing other things. After more than six readings, her child had learnt to recite the poem from memory without any forced memorization that is the standard of the day.

What a no-fuss approach to storing up beautiful words and imaginings into the mind of a child! The fault of many schools is that they force memorization upon a child line by line and ruin the beauty of recitation with tedious drilling.

How We Approach Recitation

We keep our recitations in a Truth, Goodness and Beauty Binder and recite them at the beginning of our school day during our morning time. I simply read them aloud daily and, by and by, my student can say them along with me.

We learn one Bible verse and one poem at a time and don’t move on to another until we can recite the one we’re working on. We review previous verses and poems at the end of each week.
