Ambleside Online Weekly Schedule
Scheduling AO Subjects Throughout the Week
It is a truth universally acknowledged that every Charlotte Mason homeschooling mother must be in want of an efficient schedule. It is my hope that you take a bit of inspiration from how our family schedules our homeschooling subjects throughout the week.
The main course of our homeschool curriculum is Ambleside Online, a free online Charlotte Mason curriculum plan. My oldest daughter is currently in Year One. At the time of this post, we are over halfway through our second term. We have stayed Ambleside Online “purists” and have, thus far, gotten to all of the suggested readings and weekly subjects.
The weekly subject schedule I have developed for our family allows us to stay on par with AO’s reading schedule and creates a varied rotation of the subjects. It is not a timetable or an “order of events”. It is simply a tool I use when opening up my homeschool planner each week to know which subjects we are completing for each specific day of the week.
You can find a free printable of our Weekly Schedule near the bottom of this post as well as a blank template if you desire to experiment by creating your own.
The Weekly Homeschool Schedule Breakdown
There are essentially three parts to Ambleside Online’s curriculum plan and each of these are reflected in our weekly schedule. They are:
Daily Work
These are subjects like math, handwriting/copywork, phonics/reading, foreign language, physical activity, recitation and poetry. These are the suggested daily subjects directly from the AO schedule.
Weekly Work
These are subjects that only need to be attended to on a weekly basis. AO’s suggested weekly subjects are artist study, composer study, nature study, folk song/hymn, art (drawing), geography, handicrafts, timeline and map. Our family does one to three weekly subjects each day.
Daily Readings
This is the bulk of Ambleside Online’s curriculum. The readings come from subjects such as Bible (New and Old Testament), literature, history, and natural history. I typically have one to three daily readings scheduled each day.

How long does homecshooling take each day with this schedule?
I will admit, the Ambleside Online schedule is intimidating at first. But remember, Charlotte Mason’s method involves short readings of varied subjects. Ambleside Online’s readings and subjects can range from five to twenty minutes long, but no more than that.
We start our homeschool day by 9:00 AM and finish the daily work and daily readings by 11:00 AM. That includes interruptions from my two and four-year-old children. We are sometimes able to do weekly subjects during this time frame as well depending on the day.
However, we often take a break and do our weekly subjects following lunch which typically lasts no more than thirty minutes. But your timeline can work however it needs to for your family.

Dear Reader,
It’s my prayer that this post has been helpful to you. A weekly subject schedule can make homeschool planning much easier when you know which subjects you are working on each day. Ambleside Online has been such a blessing to our literary family. I pray your family enjoys it just as much as we have!
Happy homeschooling!
Humbly,
Haley
