Patriotism in Home Education
“…what I mean by patriotism is an intelligent appreciation of all things noble in the romances, the literature and in the history of one’s own country.” - Charlotte M. Mason, Towards a Philosophy of Education
Many of us who attended public school can remember reciting the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. The intercom would rouse us to our feet, and we would dutifully place our hands upon our hearts with due reverence to our country’s flag. I’m unsure if they still do this in school but I am more than happy to include it in our homeschool. We use Charlotte Mason’s philosophy of education and she firmly believed in teaching a love for one’s country.
“But before we teach children to criticise the institutions of their country, before we teach them to be critical of what is bad, let us teach them to recognize and admire what is good.” - Charlotte M. Mason, Towards a Philosophy of Education
Learning our country’s Pledge of Allegiance is a stepping-stone in cultivating that appreciation of our country. It is an easy addition to your homeschool’s morning time to start the day.
A Firm Foundation
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
An even more important inheritance than love of country to pass down to your children is a living faith. It is the foundation of all other knowledge and wisdom. No Sunday school class will teach your child to know and love Jesus more than their own parents in their own home.
I love the Pledge to the Christian Flag and the Pledge to the Bible. Our church recites them at Vacation Bible School every summer and I added them to our morning time binder when I realized that my child didn’t know them. I love the camaraderie of our entire family reciting them together as we commit to loving and following Jesus.
